Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra: DPN Removal

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra or DPNs are small, benign (non-cancerous) bumps, that typically appear on the face, neck, and chest. They are harmless and are typically removed for aesthetic reasons. DPNs are often confused with seborrheic keratoses that most commonly affect patients with lighter skin (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I and II). DPNs are more common in people with darker skin tones of African or Asian descent (Fitzpatrick Skin Types IV and VI).

WHAT ARE DPNs?

How are DPNs removed at Abraza Skin Studio?

At Abraza Skin Studio in Atlanta and Silver Spring, we treat DPNs by removing them with electrodesiccatrion (cauterizing). Zapping the bumps with an electric current from a probe. Skin is first treated for 20 minutes with a numbing cream. We utilize one-time use, disposable cautery needle probes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • They are two times more common in women than men. 1 in 4 African Americans have them. They increase incidence with age.

    • Caused by an overgrowth of skin cells (keratinocytes)

    • They tend to be hereditary. There may be a possible link between UV exposure and DPN development.

  • There are several ways to remove DPNs including electrodessication (cauterizing), excision (cutting), curettage (scraping), cryotherapy or cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen), or laser therapy.

  • The DPN will scab and fall off in 1-3 days. The areas treated may be red and slightly swollen up to 7 days. The skin underneath will then go through a healing process to restore skin to its original color. Sometimes it may leave a lighter color which eventually fills into your normal color days to weeks. Hyperpigmentation (darkening) may result and with proper aftercare recommendations, it will improve over several weeks. Downtime is from 7-30 days with full results at 3-4 months.
